Cinema Refurbishment – Sunderland University

Project Overview

We were appointed by the University of Sunderland to deliver the refurbishment of a cinema room over a 3-month period. The project focused on upgrading the existing space through significant improvements to electrical systems, acoustics and furniture, creating a modern and accessible cinema environment.

 

Scope of Works

The works began with the full strip-out of existing ceilings and floor finishes, along with the removal of all acoustic wall linings. Existing seating was dismantled and removed and damaged mechanical and electrical systems were stripped out. Following the demolition phase, new acoustic ceiling panels with integrated lighting were installed, together with upgraded soundproof wall linings.

The furniture and decorating phase included the installation of wider, more comfortable seating with padded armrests. Accessibility was improved through the introduction of wheelchair-accessible seating and the construction of a central aisle. New specialist flooring tiles were laid and all walls were painted and finished.

Ventilation systems were replaced and the air-conditioning upgraded. New electrical wiring was installed throughout the cinema, including dedicated power supplies for projection and AV equipment. Specialist lighting was added, comprising LED ceiling lights, perimeter strip lighting and enhanced emergency exit lighting and signage.

The project also included the installation of upgraded digital projectors, 3D sound systems, wireless control systems and Cat6 data cabling to support high-speed internet and streaming.

 

End result

The project received positive feedback regarding both the execution of the works and the overall quality of the finished cinema space.
