Palace Green Library – Roof and Facade Refurbishment –
Durham University
Client: Durham University
Architect : Howard Litchfield
Value: £1,250,000
Project overview
Durham University contracted us to undertake roof and facade refurbishment works at the Grade II listed Palace Green Library. The scope included structural repairs, drainage improvements and conservation works to the historic facade.

Two substantial scaffold structures were designed and constructed to provide safe access and support temporary roof systems protecting the building during refurbishment. The project was delivered in two phases, with Phase 1 focusing on the Educational Learning Centre and Phase 2 covering the Wolfson and Dean Galleries.

Scope of work
Following installation of the temporary roofs, existing stone roof coverings were carefully removed in sections. Materials were selected, sorted and cleaned to maximise reuse of original stone slates. Timber surveys identified areas requiring treatment and replacement of infested or decayed elements. Once roof structures were restored, bat-friendly waterproof membranes were installed, followed by counter battening and battening prior to reinstatement of salvaged stone slates.

Gutters and downpipes were refurbished, repaired and partially renewed to ensure free-flowing and defect-free drainage systems.

Facade restoration works were undertaken alongside the roofing programme, including stone replacement, repointing, stabilisation works and non-abrasive stone cleaning. Stone and mortar samples were prepared and approved by the University’s Conservation Officer prior to commencement to ensure compliance with heritage requirements.

End result
The project preserved the historic fabric of the building while delivering a reliable new roofing system, reducing the likelihood of further intervention for many years. Works were carefully coordinated around events held in and around Palace Green. The client expressed high satisfaction with the quality of workmanship, professionalism of the site team and overall project management.

Following the success of the scheme, a negotiated £2 million project for similar works to two further University buildings on the opposite side of the Green was awarded and is currently being delivered.
