Client: South Tyneside Co-op Special School Trust and Keelman’s Way School, Hebburn
Architect: South Tyneside Council – Scott Roberts
Value: £590,000
Project overview
We were appointed to deliver a new single-storey pavilion within the grounds of Keelman’s Way School in Hebburn. The project involved constructing a modern, purpose-built facility using a structural steel framing (SFS) system, alongside comprehensive drainage and external works.
Delivered within a live school environment, the scheme required careful planning, coordination and phased construction to ensure the safety of pupils, staff and visitors at all times.
Scope of work
The structure comprised of a reinforced concrete raft slab, loadbearing steel SFS structure with associated hot rolled steel elements.
The building envelope incorporated facing brickwork, rendered insulation systems and Canadian Western Red Cedar cladding, complemented by aluminium curtain walling, pressed aluminium parapet cappings and a high-performance single-ply roofing system with roof drainage outlets and overflow provisions.
Internal works included partitioning, suspended ceilings, acoustic treatments, bespoke storage solutions, fitted kitchen installation and a full finishes package including LVT, carpet tiles and safety flooring. Mechanical and electrical coordination was integral throughout, including fire alarm, emergency lighting and associated safety systems.
Externally, the project included removal of existing site features, new and adapted drainage systems, hard and soft landscaping, kerbing, paving and reinstatement works to integrate the pavilion seamlessly within the existing school grounds.
All activities were carefully managed within a fully operational school, with robust safeguarding procedures, segregated working zones and strict health and safety controls implemented to minimise disruption and maintain a secure environment.
End result
The project was delivered safely, on programme and to a high standard of quality. The new pavilion provides Keelman’s Way School with a flexible, modern space that supports teaching, learning and community use.
The finished facility enhances the school’s estate with a durable, energy-efficient building designed to serve pupils and staff for many years to come.
