Extension – Blyth Health Centre, Northumberland
Client: NHS Property Services
Architect: Gleeds Advisory Ltd
Value: £420,000
Overview
A contract was awarded by NHS Property Services for a single-storey extension to Blyth Health Centre, which was completed in 2024. The facility remained live throughout the programme, requiring detailed planning, coordination and liaison to ensure no disruption to daily healthcare services.

Scope of works
Works commenced with deep foundations within a landlocked area due to poor ground conditions, existing drainage and existing foundation depths. Groundworks included the diversion of several live underground drains.

Following completion of substructure works, external masonry walls were constructed with careful selection of a suitable brick match to satisfy stakeholders. Once the building was made watertight with roof windows and doors installed, large structural openings were formed between the existing and new areas, including temporary works to maintain stability.

Internal fitout included impact-resistant, fire-rated and soundproof partitions to create new rooms. New and replacement suspended ceilings were installed alongside fire-rated ceilings to achieve the required compartmentation. Fire-rated doors were fitted and certified by an in-house BM Trada fire door manager, with several doors incorporating access-controlled locks and readers.

Highly durable flooring and skirting were laid with easy-clean wall finishes in accordance with NHS standards. Mechanical plumbing and electrical systems were upgraded, including new LED lighting, emergency lighting, power and data outlets. The fire alarm system, emergency lighting and fire exit signage were integrated and a new CCTV system was installed to provide security monitoring.

End result
Pre-handover inspections were undertaken to ensure compliance with contractual standards, followed by certification of electrical, plumbing and fire safety systems. A final deep clean and disinfection was completed in line with NHS requirements prior to formal handover.
